Discover Schmidt’S Sausage Haus Restaurant

Walking into Schmidt’S Sausage Haus Restaurant feels like stepping into a living piece of Columbus history. I still remember my first visit after a long afternoon wandering German Village, hungry and curious, following the smell of grilled sausage drifting down East Kossuth Street. Located at 240 E Kossuth St, Columbus, OH 43206, United States, this place isn’t just another stop on a food map-it’s a landmark that locals talk about with pride and visitors remember long after they leave.

The menu is the heart of the experience, and it’s unapologetically bold. Sausages are made in-house using traditional German methods, a process that involves coarse grinding, natural casings, and carefully balanced seasoning. I once chatted with a staff member who explained how recipes have been refined over generations, sticking closely to old-world techniques while meeting modern food safety standards set by organizations like the USDA. That attention to detail shows up in every bite, whether you’re ordering a classic bratwurst, a spicy Bahama Mama, or a hearty knockwurst served with sauerkraut and potato salad.

What really pulls people in is the consistency. According to National Restaurant Association data, repeat customers value reliable quality more than trendy menus, and this restaurant is a case study in that idea. Reviews across multiple platforms often mention how the food tastes exactly as expected-even years apart. I’ve personally brought out-of-town friends here, and every single time, the reaction is the same wide-eyed pause followed by a grin that says this is serious comfort food.

Dessert deserves its own moment, especially the cream puffs. They’re massive, freshly filled, and so well known that many diners order them before they even finish their main course. Watching servers carry them through the dining room feels like a small show, and it’s common to hear people whisper bold statements like legendary cream puffs or worth every calorie as they pass by. These aren’t marketing lines-they’re spontaneous reactions from people who know they’re eating something special.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere adds another layer. Long communal tables encourage conversation, and live music nights often turn dinner into an event. This setup reflects research from hospitality studies published by Cornell University, which highlights how shared dining spaces increase customer satisfaction and perceived value. You don’t just eat here; you participate. I’ve ended up in conversations with strangers about favorite menu picks, family traditions, and how long they’ve been coming back.

The location also plays a role in its charm. Being close to downtown Columbus and surrounded by historic streets makes it easy to pair a meal with sightseeing. For many families, this restaurant is part of a routine-birthdays, reunions, game-day gatherings-something confirmed again and again in long-form reviews that read more like personal stories than ratings.

Of course, no place is perfect. Peak hours can mean long waits, and the popularity sometimes leads to a packed dining room that feels loud and busy. For some, that’s part of the fun; for others, it might be overwhelming. Still, staff usually manage the flow efficiently, and the energy matches the food: big, bold, and full of character.

From a professional standpoint, it’s impressive how this restaurant balances tradition with scale. Maintaining consistent quality while serving thousands of guests weekly is no small feat, something food industry experts often cite as a major challenge for legacy establishments. Here, it’s handled with discipline, clear processes, and a deep respect for craft.

Every visit reinforces why this spot continues to earn strong reviews and loyal fans. It’s not chasing trends or trying to reinvent itself. It knows exactly what it is, serves it confidently, and invites everyone to the table with a plate full of German-American comfort food done right.

  • Awesome classic German fare. Complete with an accordion two piece band and old brick roads out front. Throwback to the immigrants who came here almost 150 years ago. Friendly staff. The potato soup is thick and creamy. Stuffed cabbage, sauerbraten, and cream puff were perfect.

  • Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in Columbus serves solid German fare in a lively, historic setting. The food was good, though not outstanding—our favorites were the soft pretzels with beer cheese, the brats, and the desserts. We noticed a new all-you-can-eat bar and wished we had tried it to sample more of the menu. That said, we loved the history, great service, and warm, inviting ambiance, which made the visit a memorable experience.

  • The buffet is back! Schmidt’s bratwurst, German potato salad (warm) and German chocolate cake is good any day of the week and anytime of time of the day. Love the warm and casual space. While it is may seem noisy to some, I find the table conversations pleasant and an indicator of everyone around me enjoying their meal and the company with them.

  • What a great experience. This was my family's first time. The place was packed when we walked in but we were seated promptly. The service was great and the food came out remarkably fast. The potato soup was delicious. We ordered the pretzel appetizer which came with cheese and mustard. My husband ordered the sausage sampler which was great. I got the reuben with potato pancakes. And lastly the desserts were great. Fresh and delicious. The neighborhood was cute and there were 2 shops afterwards to visit.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I recently dined at Schmidt's Sausage Haus, and I must say, it was an outstanding experience! I tried the turkey Reuben, and it was absolutely delicious—perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. The side of potato pancakes was phenomenal; they were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, truly a must-try! The beer selection was impressive, and I opted for a German light that complemented my meal beautifully. To top off my visit, I took a cream puff to go, which was a delightful treat! What really stood out was the fantastic interaction with the staff and fellow guests. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it a great place to enjoy a meal. I can't wait to return for another round of those amazing dishes! Highly recommend!

  • This was such a unique food experience and had great service. The German food was authentic and delicious. It stays pretty crowded and there is a wait. We enjoyed the buffet for 25 but I couldn’t even eat 1 plate. The desserts liked so good but I couldn’t eat anymore. Their beer selection was amazing.

  • Walking into Schmidt’s, you’re immediately struck by the warm, Old-World atmosphere: dark wood booths, Bavarian décor, servers sometimes dressed in traditional attire, and occasionally even live polka or accordion music. The sense of history is very much alive. On the food side, Schmidt’s is known for its hearty German fare. Their Bahama Mama sausage is a standout—the smoky, slightly spicy flavor has made it a local legend. The old-world sausage sampler is a smart pick if you want to sample a variety. As for sides, patrons often praise the potato salad, sauerkraut, and red cabbage. No review of Schmidt’s would be complete without mentioning dessert: the jumbo cream puffs. These half-pound pastries are light, fluffy, and rich — a proper, indulgent ending to any meal.
